Do Nuts Add to Your Cholesterol??

Let me start with a few MYTHS and FACTS in the area of cholesterol

Myth: In order to reduce cholesterol, avoid nuts
Fact: Nuts are cholesterol free

Myth: Cholesterol is bad for your health
Facts: Cholesterol helps in digesting fat, synthesizing Vitamin D and various hormones

Cholesterol is majorly synthesized within the body to carry out the above mentioned functions. Depending on the body’s requirement, the body synthesizes it.The vegetarian food we eat doesnt directly contribute to the cholesterol storage in the body. The readymade source however, is available from animal sources like milk, eggs, etc.

Two of the main reasons why cholesterol starts bulking up in the system are:

  • No physical activity
  • Crash/ Restricted Diet

While our instant reaction to high cholesterol is cutting the fat, we forget to replace it with healthy forms of indirect fats like nuts, coconuts resulting in further nutrient deficiency.

So the next time you try to reduce the fat intake to address this problem, here is what you would want to do:

  1. Abstain from animal sources.
  2. Reduce vegetable oils to 1-2 tsp a day
  3. Add 1-2 fist of nuts in your diet like peanuts, coconuts, cashews, almonds ets. These sources in their natural form contain nutrients that help in easy digestion and prevents from excessive synthesis of cholesterol in the body.
  4. Start being active. Apart from exercise, make it a habit to move around the whole day to enhance cholesterol metabolism.
