Healthy Reports, Unhealthy Liver?

Jaw Dropping Fact about Liver: Liver can regenerate on its own!!
If a large chunk of liver is removed, Liver is self-sufficient to become its original size in time. 

That is because Liver practically performs almost every function in the Body. Lets have a quick look at them to know what I mean:

Function of the Liver

The liver is one of the most vital organs in your body, performing over 500 essential functions. Some of its key roles include:

  1. Detoxification: Filters toxins, alcohol, and drugs from the blood

  2. Metabolism: Helps digest fats, proteins, and carbohydrates

  3. Nutrient Storage: Stores vitamins (A, D, E, K, B12), iron, and glycogen

  4. Hormonal Balance: Regulates sex hormones, cortisol, and thyroid hormones

  5. Bile Production: Helps break down fats and aids digestion

  6. Cholesterol Management: Produces and clears cholesterol from the body

  7. Blood Sugar Regulation: Maintains glucose balance by storing and releasing sugar as needed

Are Reports the Right Indicator of Your Liver Health?

Not always.
They may remain within normal range even when liver function is compromised

This is because:

  1. The liver is resilient and compensates until it is significantly damaged

  2. Fatty liver and inflammation often develop silently

  3. Symptoms can appear before blood tests show abnormalities

Functional assessmentsultrasounds, fibroscans are early signs and are just as important as lab reports to catch the problem (one of it being Fatty Liver) before it shows on the Blood Reports. 

As a Functional Nutritionist, I work towards preventative health thereby not simply looking at the blood reports but by going through all the  possible symptoms and signs with you. And it only makes sense because the blood reports show abnormalcy only when the problem has advanced. 

Symptoms That Indicate Your Liver Is Not Functioning Optimally

You might not need a lab test to suspect liver stress. Common signs include:

  1. Bloating and indigestion

  2. Chronic fatigue and brain fog

  3. Unexplained weight gain or trouble losing weight

  4. Acne or hormonal imbalance

  5. High cholesterol or blood pressure

  6. Insulin Resistance

  7. Constipation or irregular bowel movements

  8. Mood swings, irritability, or poor sleep

These symptoms are your body’s early signals that your liver might need support.
